Port Louis the capital, is located in the Northwest coast of Mauritius. Localized between mountains and a calm bay of the Indian Ocean, this area cannot be missed if you’re planning on visiting Mauritius. Its location is strategic, indeed being near the sand beaches of Grand Bay and Trou aux Biches and also the animated Flic en Flac village. Have a look at the central market
You may want to head to the central market of Port Louis, which is two century old. Indeed it is the best way to become immersed in the Mauritian culture. Between soft smells of spices of cardamone and tumeric and thousands of vegetables and fruits flavors as tamarind and bigarade, the market stands every day of the year. Stroll down the walkways, preferably in the morning due to the crowd and the heat on the afternoon, and taste typical products of Mauritius as the spice cake and the “bringelle” (composed of eggplant).

Climb the Citadel
Also known under the name of Fort Adélaïde, this citadel is located on the top of its hill «la petite montagne» at 100 metres of altitude. Mauritius is proud of its citadel from the 19th century, at the time it was used to defend the city from potential attacks. For those who have the courage to climb it (about 30 minutes walking), you’ll discover from the ramparts a panoramic sight of the whole city of Port Louis. We strongly recommend you to see the sunset there, it is breathtaking.

Visit Caudan: the seafront of Port Louis
Oppened in 1996, the marina of Port Louis is a real living place where there are lots of Mauritian youngsters and travelers looking for good bargains in numerous designer shops and souvenir shops. For the authenticity, the craft market of Caudan offer products as spices, basketry or ship models made in Mauritius and Rodrigues. It suits all tastes and for the gourmands there are several restaurants preparing dishes perfumed as samosas or brianis (composed of rice), and you can eat those under parasols of the small dedicated spot in Caudan. The seafront includes a casino, a movie theater and an huge mall.

Hike till the top of Pouce Mountain
The Pouce peak is one of the highest in Mauritius, culminating at 811 metres. This hike welcomes everyone whether you’re a big sportsman or an adept of idleness ! It’s a two and an half peaceful walk through eucalyptus, tamarind trees, tropical flowers with sweet smells of wild ginger and the sound of the birds chirping. Once you get to the top, you have a beautiful 360-degree panoramic view of Mauritius. You will see at the bottom of the moutain the Port Louis city, the North islands of Mauritius as “Coin de Mire”, Gabriel island or the Snakes island, the vegetal region of Moka… Indeed “Waw” is the only word that will come in mind and you’ll forget that you walked more than two hours to get to this amazing place.

Bet at the hippodrome of Champs de Mars
Between loving horses and passion of gambling, bets are a national sport in Mauritius! Every week-ends, the hippodrome of Champs de Mars is full. In the grandstands the excitement is skyrocketing; the ones betting are getting hurried for the jockeys announcement, the horsemen are getting on the horse, ready to go, and “bang” the race is on! The spectators observe, comment, shout and laugh. A beautiful mix of emotions to discover if you’re somewhere around Port Louis a weekend and you want to share an intense moment, typically Mauritian. A great family activity!
